The University of Malaga was founded in 1972. It has about 40.000 students and 2000 lecturers distributed in around 50 different faculties and schools including the School of Computer Engineering that was created in 1987 and has about 2500 students. The research group ”Investigación y Aplicaciones en Inteligencia Artificial (IA)2” is composed of 26 full time researchers and led by Prof. Ricardo Conejo. The research lines of the group cover many aspect of AI, including diagnosis and design problems applied to Civil Engineering, Machine Learning, User Modelling, Intelligent Tutorial Systems, Social and Virtual Communities and Data Mining. The group has published more than 50 scientific papers in the last 10 years and has participated in research projects supported by the EU, DG XXII (COMMET, FORCE, LEONARDO), and by the Spanish National Research Ministry (MCYT). Our research group has wide experience in the area of data mining (DM) and knowledge discovery (KD). We have developed different machine learning algorithms and we have used them, in concurrence with other well known algorithms, to perform data mining task in real problems (breast cancer, mental diseases, insurance companies, etc.). Thus, some concepts that were not really clear (or even unknown) could be understood by the experts. RESEARCHERSBeatriz Barros![]() Beatriz Barros received her PhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, in June 1999 from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid with a thesis on the automatic analysis of the collaborative processes. As an associate professor of the UNED (National Distance Education University) she was involved in European projects such as Divilab, Coldex, and finally in the network excellence Kaleidoscope. In 2006 she joined the University of Malaga, as a member of the IAIA research group.
